Defining mechanisms of immune dysregulation
and host-microbe interactions

Immunity & host defense

Our research scope

The immune system is responsible for the identification and elimination of pathogens, damaged/transformed cells, as well as tissue repair and remodeling. The ability of the immune system to respond to microbial and cellular insults is influenced by several factors including age, nutrition, environmental exposure, and microbial burden.
The Messaoudi laboratory uses a systems biology approach that combines next generation sequencing techniques with functional assays to understand how various factors impact the ability of the immune system to function adequately. Specifically, our research is focused on four general areas:

1

Role of the microbiome in health and disease

2

Mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis

3

Dysregulation of immunity by substance use disorder, age, and obesity

4

Modulation of immunity at the maternal-fetal interface

Principal investigator mission

Dr. Ilhem Messaoudi Powers

I have had a long-standing interest in pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge and shaping the future of academic institutions. As a department chair and principal investigator, I have the privilege of sharing my passion for science and thirst for knowledge with individuals from all walks of life. I draw upon my personal experiences to provide my trainees and staff with the tools and opportunities to learn, grow and become successful independent scientists who believe in themselves and achieve their full potential.
